Dress fabric is the single most important decision in garment sewing. The fabric determines the silhouette the drape the comfort and how the finished dress photographs under any lighting. A fitted bodycon dress needs stretch a flowing maxi needs lightweight drape and a structured cocktail dress needs fabric with body. Choosing wrong means the dress does not look like the pattern photo no matter how carefully you sew.

This collection covers every dress scenario. Mikado satin for architectural gowns chiffon for flowing overlays stretch crepe for tailored sheath dresses and stretch velvet for statement evening wear. Every fabric sold by the yard with no minimum and shipped fast worldwide rolled and crease-free.

THREE DRESS SILHOUETTES AND THEIR FABRIC MATCHES

1) Fitted sheath and bodycon. A fitted dress needs fabric that moves with the body without losing its shape. The right amount of stretch eliminates gaping at the zipper and keeps the hemline level when sitting:

a) Stretch crepe for work-to-evening sheath dresses where the matte finish reads professional and the stretch delivers all-day comfort

b) Stretch velvet for evening bodycon dresses where the plush texture photographs as luxury and the 4-way stretch keeps the dress in place

c) Power mesh as a lining layer inside fitted bodices to prevent the outer fabric from stretching out over hours of wear

2) A-line and ball gown skirts. Full skirts need fabric that creates volume without weighing the wearer down. Multiple layers of lightweight fabric achieve the dramatic look while remaining comfortable to dance in all night.

3) Wrap and bias-cut dresses. These designs need fabric that drapes along the body's curves instead of standing away from them. Chiffon and lightweight satin create that liquid drape that makes bias-cut dresses so flattering.

FABRIC YARDAGE FOR DRESSES

A simple sheath dress typically needs 2 to 3 yards of 59-inch wide fabric. A full-skirted gown with lining and overlay can require 8 to 15 yards depending on the length. Always order 10 percent more than your pattern calls for — matching dye lots on a reorder is not guaranteed. If your pattern does not specify fabric type send us the pattern number and we'll recommend the best match from our collection.

All dress fabrics ship fast worldwide. No minimum. Questions about yardage stretch direction or which fabric suits your pattern? We are here to help.
