Rich Stretch Velvet

Velvet with stretch changes how you approach fitted garments. Rich Stretch Velvet combines a plush, dense pile with enough elasticity to follow body curves without pulling at the seams. The surface has that classic velvet depth — light catches the pile from different angles, creating the rich color shifts that only real velvet can produce.

Fifty colors at 59 inches wide. The stretch runs across the width of the fabric, so pattern pieces cut with the stretch going around the body will fit more comfortably than non-stretch velvet alternatives.

THREE AREAS WHERE STRETCH VELVET EXCELS

1) Fitted evening gowns. Traditional velvet is gorgeous but unforgiving. The stretch in this fabric makes it work for mermaid silhouettes, bodycon styles, and fitted cocktail dresses where the fabric needs to hug without binding. Works beautifully for:

a) Off-the-shoulder gowns where the stretch keeps the neckline in place without slipping

b) Wrap dresses and surplice styles where the fabric must drape smoothly over curves

c) Fitted jacket bodices on evening gowns that need structure with comfort

Layer with power mesh underneath for extra support on strapless designs.

2) Blazers and structured jackets. Stretch velvet blazers look expensive and feel comfortable. The pile catches ambient light in a way that makes the garment read as premium from across the room. The stretch means you can move your arms naturally, which is rare for velvet jackets.

3) Holiday and formal event decor. Velvet table runners, draped backdrops, and chair covers all benefit from the way velvet absorbs and reflects light differently from every angle. The weight gives clean lines with minimal pinning.

SEWING STRETCH VELVET

Cut on a single layer with the pile running downward (from top to bottom of the garment) for the richest color. A walking foot prevents the fabric from shifting on the cutting table. Mark your cut lines with chalk on the backing, not the pile.

Use a ballpoint or stretch needle (75/11 or 90/14 depending on thickness). A narrow zigzag stitch or lightning bolt stitch accommodates the stretch. Polyester thread stretches with the fabric — cotton will restrict the give and may break at stressed seams.
