Stretch satin Mikado is where structure meets shine. Mikado satin is known for its firm body and substantial weight which holds clean lines in structured gowns and bridal wear without the need for heavy interfacing. The added stretch makes it comfortable to wear for hours — something traditional Mikado cannot do. This is satin that looks architectural and feels forgiving.
Mikado works where you want the fabric to define the shape. A single layer of Mikado creates a bold silhouette that stands away from the body in all the right places. Layer it over our silky satin for bodice panels where the lighter Iconic provides a smooth base and the Mikado adds structural volume.
THREE WAYS MIKADO DEFINES SILHOUETTES
1) Architectural bridal gowns. Mikado is the fabric of choice for ball gown bodices structured A-lines and dramatic trumpet skirts that need to hold their shape from the first fitting through the last dance:
a) Off-shoulder neckline bands where Mikado's weight keeps the neckline in place without boning
b) Full circle skirts where the fabric's body creates that dramatic wide hem line without layers of petticoats underneath
c) Structured peplum details on fitted gowns where the Mikado peplum stands out from the body line and stays crisp through the reception
2) Evening separates and statement pieces. A Mikado crop top paired with a flowing skirt or a Mikado jacket over a simple dress — the structured nature of this fabric turns any basic garment into a fashion moment. The subtle sheen reads as luxurious under both natural and artificial light.
3) Home accents with body. Mikado works as a decorative fabric for structured pillow covers boxed table runners and draped accents where the fabric needs to hold its folded shape. The satin surface catches ambient light and adds a premium feel to any styled surface.
SEWING STRUCTURED SATIN
Mikado cuts cleanly because its weight prevents it from shifting. Use sharp shears and cut on a double or single layer depending on your pattern. A universal 90/14 needle handles the weight cleanly and polyester thread matches the sheen without visible contrast on the surface. The stretch means you can use less ease than traditional Mikado patterns call for.
Press on medium heat with a press cloth to protect the surface finish. Avoid dragging the iron across the fabric — press up and down to keep the surface smooth.
