Velvet is the fabric that transforms any garment into something that looks expensive. The dense pile absorbs and reflects light simultaneously, creating that characteristic depth that shifts as the fabric moves. When you run your hand across velvet, the pile changes direction and the color appears to shift, which is why velvet photographs so dynamically under changing light conditions.
Our velvet collection includes stretch velvet for fitted garments that need to move with the body, plus non-stretch options for structured pieces that hold their shape. The color range spans from classic black and jewel tones to seasonal additions that photographers and designers request. Velvet works for gowns, blazers, home decor, and anything where texture needs to do the talking.
THREE AREAS WHERE VELVET EXCELS
1) Fall and winter evening wear. Velvet is the defining fabric of cold-season glamour. The depth of color under warm venue lighting creates a richness that flat fabrics cannot replicate:
a) Fitted velvet cocktail dresses in jewel tones that photograph as deep and luxurious under flash
b) Velvet blazers and structured jackets for formal events where you want texture without sequins
c) Velvet sashes and belts as accent pieces on satin or chiffon gowns for mixed-texture contrast
2) Holiday and seasonal styling. Velvet dominates the holiday season for good reason. Deep green, burgundy, navy, and black velvet all read as festive without being loud. Table runners, chair covers, and draped backdrops in velvet create a warm, elevated atmosphere that cotton and polyester backdrops simply cannot match.
3) Home decor and upholstery accents. Velvet pillow covers, throw blankets, and accent panels bring a tactile luxury to any room. The fabric feels as good as it looks, which is why velvet shows up in high-end interior design again and again. Pair velvet accents with our wide-format organza for layered table settings that combine texture and transparency.
WORKING WITH VELVET
Cut velvet with the pile running downward for the richest color. Pin generously to prevent shifting. Use a walking foot if your machine has one, or pin the layers together and cut on a single layer for precision. A universal 90/14 needle handles the weight cleanly. Polyester thread in a matching shade gives nearly invisible seams.
Never press velvet directly with an iron. Use a velvet board or press from the wrong side with a pressing cloth to avoid crushing the pile.
All our velvet is sold by the yard with no minimum. We ship fast worldwide with every yard rolled to protect the pile. Questions about pile direction or which velvet weight works for your project? Let us know.
