Four-Way Stretch

Four-way stretch is the maximum flexibility a woven or knit fabric can offer. It stretches equally in every direction, which means the fabric conforms to the body like a second skin and recovers to its original shape regardless of how the body moves. This is the fabric type that athletic brands, dancewear manufacturers, and performance costume designers specify when there is zero margin for restriction. If a garment needs to move in any direction without binding, pulling, or distorting, four-way stretch is the only answer.

Our four-way stretch collection includes performance meshes, athletic knits, and specialty fabrics where maximum elasticity is the primary requirement. These fabrics are used for high-intensity dance routines, competition gymnastics, fitted bodysuits, and any garment where the wearer needs complete freedom of movement. Layer four-way stretch bases with our sequin mesh overlays for performance costumes that stretch and sparkle simultaneously.

THREE WAYS FOUR-WAY STRETCH MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

1) Competition dance and gymnastics. When an athlete or performer is executing a split, backbend, or overhead lift, the fabric needs to stretch in whatever direction the body goes. Four-way stretch delivers that complete mobility:

a) Four-way stretch mesh bodysuits that serve as the base for competition costumes with beading and sequin appliqués

b) Athletic compression wear that supports muscles through full range of motion without restricting any movement direction

c) Fitted leotards and unitards for gymnasts where the fabric must recover instantly after extreme stretching

2) Shapewear and foundation garments. Four-way stretch fabrics provide graduated compression that smooths and supports from every angle. Unlike one-way or two-way stretch materials, four-way compression wraps the body evenly, which prevents the fabric from pulling or distorting in areas where the body curves differently. The result is a garment that stays in place through hours of wear without rolling, bunching, or losing its grip.

3) Medical and therapeutic garments. Compression sleeves, post-surgical support garments, and therapeutic wraps all rely on four-way stretch for even pressure distribution. The fabric adapts to body changes throughout the day while maintaining consistent compression levels. Our power mesh collection includes four-way options specifically chosen for support applications where controlled compression matters.

SEWING FOUR-WAY STRETCH FABRICS

Four-way stretch demands the most attention to technique. Use a stretch needle (75/11) and a narrow zigzag or cover stitch that stretches with the fabric. A standard straight stitch will snap under tension. Polyester thread is essential since it stretches and recovers alongside the fabric. When cutting, note that four-way stretch fabrics can distort if handled roughly. Lay the fabric flat, let it settle, and cut on a single layer for the most accurate results.

When drafting patterns for four-way stretch, reduce the pattern size by ten to fifteen percent to account for the fabric's stretch. The garment will expand to fit the body and the compression will hold it in place.

All our four-way stretch fabrics are sold by the yard with no minimum. Shipped fast worldwide with every yard rolled and protected. Questions about stretch percentage, compression level, or which four-way fabric works for your project? Reach out anytime.
