Nylon is the fiber that changed the textile industry. Invented as a silk replacement, it has evolved into an essential component of modern fabrics, especially in mesh, tulle, and stretch applications where strength and flexibility matter. Nylon fibers are lightweight, incredibly strong for their diameter, and resistant to abrasion, which makes nylon-based fabrics the go-to choice for anything that needs to hold up under repeated movement.
Our nylon collection includes fine mesh fabrics, tulle, and power mesh where nylon is the primary structural fiber. These fabrics are used as lining, support layers, and decorative overlays in garments that range from bridal gowns to athletic wear. Nylon mesh layers beautifully under beaded tulle and sequin fabrics, providing a stable base that carries the weight of heavy embellishment without sagging.
THREE WAYS NYLON FABRICS PULL THEIR WEIGHT
1) Support and lining layers. Nylon mesh and power mesh are the hidden layers that make structured garments work. They provide invisible support that keeps bodices in shape, prevents sheer fabrics from being see-through, and adds structure without visible bulk:
a) Nylon power mesh lining for strapless gowns where hidden support keeps the bodice from slipping
b) Fine nylon tulle as an underlayer for sheer chiffon panels that need opacity without losing the floaty feel
c) Nylon mesh as a base for beaded and sequined overlays where the mesh carries the embellishment weight
2) Illusion panels and decorative mesh. The fine hexagonal weave of nylon mesh creates an almost invisible base that reads as bare skin from a distance. This is why illusion necklines, sheer sleeves, and decorative cutout panels on evening gowns almost always use nylon mesh as their foundation. The fabric is strong enough to carry embroidery, beads, and sequins while remaining nearly weightless against the skin.
3) Active and dance wear. Nylon blends resist abrasion from repeated movement and hold their shape through intense choreography. Dance costumes, competition wear, and performance outfits all benefit from nylon's combination of strength and flexibility. Pair with our power mesh collection for added compression support in fitted athletic garments.
WORKING WITH NYLON FABRICS
Nylon is generally easy to cut and sew but requires a light touch. Cut on a single layer for precision. Use a ballpoint or stretch needle (75/11) to avoid snagging the fine fibers. Polyester thread works well with nylon fabrics since both are synthetic and behave similarly under tension. Press on low heat, as nylon can melt at high temperatures.
All our nylon fabrics are sold by the yard with no minimum. We ship fast worldwide with every yard rolled and protected. Questions about mesh weight, opacity, or which nylon fabric works for your support layer? Contact us anytime.
