One-Way Stretch

One-way stretch fabrics give you movement in a single direction, which is exactly what most fitted garments need. The stretch runs across the width of the fabric, hugging the body where it curves and staying stable along the length so the garment does not sag or bag over time. This is the sweet spot between rigid non-stretch fabrics and fully elastic four-way stretch materials. You get comfort without losing the structural integrity that makes a garment look tailored.

Our one-way stretch collection includes the majority of our satin offerings, many crepe fabrics, and select velvet options. The one-way stretch makes these fabrics ideal for fitted dresses, pencil skirts, and tailored pieces that need to move with the body without stretching out of shape. Our Iconic satin collection is the best example, fifty colors with consistent one-way stretch that designers trust for everything from cocktail dresses to evening gowns.

THREE WAYS ONE-WAY STRETCH PULLS ITS WEIGHT

1) Fitted dresses and gowns. One-way stretch is the designer's secret for garments that look custom-made without the cost of a custom pattern. The stretch across the width accommodates body curves while the stable length keeps vertical seams straight and clean:

a) Fitted satin sheath dresses that zip easily and skim the body without pulling at the seams

b) Pencil skirts that stay in place while sitting and walking because the lengthwise stability prevents bagging at the knees

c) Wrap dresses where the one-way stretch lets the fabric conform to the wrap shape without overstretching the overlap

2) Tailored separates. Blazers, fitted trousers, and structured jacket bodices all benefit from one-way stretch. The fabric stretches where the body bends (across the back, around the hips) but stays firm along the grain where you need sharp lines. Pair one-way stretch fabrics with power mesh lining for garments that need both stretch comfort and structured support.

3) Lining and underlayers. One-way stretch lining fabrics move with the outer garment without adding extra give that would distort the fit. They keep the garment from catching on skin or other layers while maintaining the intended silhouette. This is especially important for structured gowns and jackets where the lining needs to behave identically to the outer fabric.

SEWING ONE-WAY STRETCH FABRICS

The key to one-way stretch is pattern placement. Always cut your pattern pieces with the stretch direction going around the body, not up and down. A universal 80/12 needle handles most one-way stretch fabrics cleanly. Use a narrow zigzag stitch on seams that cross the stretch direction, and a standard straight stitch on seams that run parallel to it. Polyester thread stretches enough to accommodate the fabric's give without popping.

When pressing one-way stretch fabrics, use medium heat and avoid dragging the iron across the surface in the direction of the stretch, as this can distort the shape while the fabric is warm.
